Health Surveillance

Health surveillance allows for early identification of ill health and helps to identify any corrective action needed. Health surveillance may be required by law if your employee is exposed to noise vibration, solvents, fumes, dusts, biological agents and other substances hazardous to health, or work in compressed air.

The starting point for all health surveillance should be your own organisations risk assessment. Through this, organisations will be able to identify hazards within their work place and in turn be able to identify those who are at risk and take steps to manage the effects. Help on how to carry out a risk assessment can be found on HSE's risk management website. Your trade association may also have useful advice and guidance.

In cases where some risks remain it would be beneficial to refer staff to occupational health for assessment. Health surveillance can help make sure that any ill health effects are detected as early as possible.
