Work related asthma affects workers inhaling dust which are respiratory sensitizers. Primarily affecting those working in food and construction industries.
Respiratory sensitizers:
- isocyanates (e.g. spray paints)
- wood dusts
- flour and grain dust
- solder flux
- laboratory animals
- glues and resins
- glutaraldehyde (Cidex)
- chemicals in hairdressing.
Managing Prevention Complying with the Control of Substance Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulation provides a framework for management of health hazards:
- assess the health risk
- prevent exposure, if reasonably practicable
- adequate control, if not
- dust monitoring, health surveillance, examination of plant, training
